Keeping a diary or journal is important on so many levels, it can be a therapeutic escape, a place to fill your diary with all your feelings, thoughts and aspirations, and of course, a way to organise your life! There are so many pretty diaries to choose from these days which undoubtedly make the whole process of organising your life much easier, and enjoyable. Whilst they offer a nice design, none of them offer that truly personal touch that will encourage and inspire you to write in it. Designing and decorating your diary will not only strengthen your desire to write in it, but it's something that represents something truly unique to yourself. Once you've selected your chosen diary or journal there is a series of things that you can do to personalise it, we would recommend using a paper bound diary if possible as this will be much easier for you to decorate. With your new diary armed at the ready, here are some of our favourite and easiest ways that you can personalise your diary.

Decorate The Covers

Once you've selected your chosen diary the best place to start looking is the cover, as it's the first area that you see when you open the diary. There are so many different things that you can do to your diary to jazz it up a bit, you can opt for a chic sophisticated look by using plain brown paper, or if you want to make it more fun, you could use a series of different coloured pieces of paper, different textures and sizes. You could even arrange them over the covers to fit into place like pieces of a puzzle. There's no right or wrong way to design your covers and you really can be as creative as you want to be! If you make the new covering easy to remove this also gives you the opportunity to update it as and when you fancy a change!

Pick A Theme

Picking an overall theme is a good way of drawing your whole diary together, although not an essential requirement, this can help make your diary look more professional and sophisticated. You may already have an instant theme popping out that you want to try, but if not, brainstorm a few ideas by thinking of your favourite things. When you've decided on your overall theme you can then plan how you want everything to look, on both the interior and exterior of the diary.  You may just want to use it as a place for inspirational images and quotes - a bit like a virtual pinterest board. This could work well by creating collages with cut out magazines and newspapers.

Stickers are such an easy and cute way of accessorising your diary, with so many different options available you'll find them in any craft or stationery store. These could be put anywhere on your diary to personalise it further, we love the idea of using them on diary pages too that represent certain things, such as party hats or presents for birthday entries, and smiley faces for any exciting events you may have lined up! This will make planning your week ahead much more bearable!

With so many cute novelty highlighters , adding some colour to your work has never been so appealing! Highlighting sections of your diary and special events is a great way to instantly draw attention to them so you don't forget a thing! With the highlighters you could also colour co-ordinate specific events and have your own key of colours so you not what each event corresponds with. You could even write special messages throughout the months in them, with personal goals or inspirational quotes which will be a pleasant surprise by the time you get to that page!

Some diaries already come with the added luxury of a ribbon bookmark which makes finding the page of the diary that you are on a much easier process. It will also add that little extra bit of character and fun factor to your diary.  There are a few different ways that you can add a bookmark to your page, we love the idea of adding a ribbon bookmark, but a conventional bookmark would also work well. We love these fun panda rocks magnetic bookmarks, they're so easy to clip to the page and they look great!
